Presentation Grade Wilkinson 1828P Scottish Basket Hilt Broadsword
Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Up for auction is one of the finest and one of the rarest swords you will ever encounter on eBay or elsew, a gold-plated presentation grade Scottish Baskethilted Broadsword etched with the devices of the 91st Highlander Regiment , the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders . This sword is in near-mint condition; the red velvet-covered, white buckskin baskethilt liner, and the silk tassels and ribbons stitched along the basket hilt liner are all in perfect condition, as is the white buckskin washer. As mentioned, the beautiful double-edged blade is decorated with the devices of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders on one side; the other with the cipher of Queen Elizabeth II. The blade, which measures 32 1/2 inches in length (825.5 mm) and 1 1/16 inches (27 mm) wide at the ricasso (sword measures 38 3/4 inches overall), has a double fuller which runs the length of the ricasso before giving way to a single center fuller which begins approx. 4 1/4 inches (108 mm) from the hilt and runs to approx. 10 1/4 inches (260.4 mm) from the tip. Please see all the photos below to truly appreciate just how magnificent this sword is. We have set the reserve to a one-time reduced price of only $1,579 . According the the former GM (of 16 years) of Wilkinson Sword (who sadly closed their doors in 2005 after a rich history spanning 233 years), this sword is very rare . He said it was made for a client in either the U.S. or Canada, and that according to the crest on the reverse side of the ricasso, it was made sometime in the 1970's-1980's. The grip is of sharkskin, painted and coated with varnish. T is no scabbard included with this sword. I made a deal with my wife: if I ever acquired an older Scottish baskethilted broadsword (I did), I would in turn sell this one (I am). The reason for this is rather simple - while in truth I am very remorseful about selling this sword, given its incredible condition, the pressure of keeping it has been almost unbearable... It's condition is too perfect , and I don't want to be the custodian responsible for the first ding, first scratch, or first tear in the silk. I rather let a collector more worthy than myself assume this responsibility. NOTE: You must be at least 18 years of age to purchase this item.
