Harris to Sylvester Smith and Quartus Brown for land in Bradford Co., PA, known as "Aurora."Thomas Harris (1784-1861) was born in Chester County, PA. He attended Brandywine Academy then the Medical School of the University of Pennsylvania, from which he graduated in 1809. He entered the Navy during the War of 1812, and remained in service the rest of his life. He took part in the engagement between the USS Wasp and HMS Frolic, and was in turn captured by HMS Poictiers. The officers and crew of the Wasp were taken to Bermuda, but returned after only a short time.Harris later sailed with Stephen Decatur in the campaign against the Barbary Pirates, taking care of the wounded. After this, much of his service was on land for the Navy. He was in charge of construction of the Naval Hospital in Philadelphia and was president of the board of medical examiners for the Navy. He also organized the first post-graduate medical school for instruction in naval medicine.Harris was one of the most respected doctors of the day, even being called on to remove a bullet from Andrew Jackson that the President had received in a duel and carried around for two decades.
