INDIAN BOY & GIRL 6 1/2 " BROWN STONEWARE PITCHER NR Captain John Smith & Pocahontas/Kissing Pilgrims SCARCEUp for auction is this lovely INDIAN BOY & GIRL 6 1/2 " BROWN STONEWARE PITCHER. It is also known as the "Captain John Smith and Pocahontas" or "Kissing Pilgrims" pitcher. The diameter of the bottom is about 5 ". The condition is excellent. T are no chips or hairlines. The figures on each side are framed by a wreath of daises. The top and bottom rims are accented with a large beaded band and broken line. The applied handle has a log pattern as if carrying out the frontier theme of the pattern. The pattern is considered SCARCE. T is an excellent description about this particular pitcher in "SALT GLAZED STONEWARE" by Taylor and Lowrance on page 57. It reads as follows; "Stories relate that once Captain John Smith and Pocahontas were married, he liked to see his wife dressed in the manner she appears on the pitcher. He bought much of her dresses himself selecting English schoolgirl types with big sashes and sailor collars. Her headdress remains in place even with her English schoolgirl attire. The Captain (or gentleman) appears to be dressed in a waist coat and top hat typical of the period. On one side of the pitcher the couple stands apart as though in conversation.
