Rare British India brockage coin. This is a quarter anna bronze coin with the Victoria Empress inscription (used 1877-1901) KM486. The normal side is quite worn, though recognizable, indicating it circulated for many years. The brockage side is an exact incuse replica of Queen's portrait, with most detail clearly visible--only the tops of the lettering is faint. A brockage is created when a coin fails to eject from the dies and thus becomes the lower die for the next coin, which gets the same image on both sides but one is incuse. In Herbert's guide this coin is number III-B-5. Numismatists did not start valuing errors until the 1970s--originally they might even bring less than a non-error coin. For the most common U.S. coin, it would have sold for $15 back in 1980. So I am starting the auction at $14.95. Note: the photo was artificially lightened and contrast turned up to show the detail of the coin. The real coin is a nice chocolate brown. The second photo is much closer to the actual color (depending on how bright your monitor is).
