I had three of these and according to some of the other paperwork, this pot cooks using three optional methods and also saves energy as the pot is also an insulator. The lid comes apart into three pieces. The lid is actually the heaviest part of the unit weighing 5 1/2lbs. There is a gasket around the rim that seals the lid quite well. I believe the handles are of bakelite. The base is double walled allowing heat to circulate in between. The pot stands 4 1/2" tall, without the lid and measures 8 1/2" across the rim. It includes the metal plate insert. According to the paperwork: Cooks with three optional methods- concentrated heat, traditional and steam. Thermos compression, preservation of energy, natural convection of heat, statics, thermos isolation, conduction of heat, radiation of heat, forced adhesion of heat, condensation.
