A very interesting and attractive old violin, probably late 19th early 20th century or possibly earlier. There are no cracks, no soundpost cracks, no pegbox cracks and no woodworm. The violin is in excellent condition. There are some surface scratches to the back which are clearly shown in the pictures and some varnish wear which is commensurate with the instrument's age. The pegs are not a very good fit and should probably be replaced. The violin is fully blocked and lined. It has a very beautiful one piece back of quilted maple. I have tried to show this in the photos but the pictures don't do the quality of the wood justice. Front is of medium grain, the ribs are of narrow curl and the head is of broad curl similar to the back. The lower rib is one piece and not jointed at the endpin. The violin is covered in a lovely transparent golden amber, coloured varnish and the wood quilting really refracts and moves around under the varnish. This should make a beautiful instrument once cleaned, polished and set up. Length of back is 358mm. There is no label in the violin.
