Mary Beckwith worked a wonderful sampler with an unusual striking Grape border, At the top she signed her work (usually worked at the bottom on completion) MARY BECKWITH's work in the 10th year of my age April th24 1809. This is worked either side of a wonderful fruit tree with a pair of birds beneath. unlike many samplers worked in cross stitch Mary has used a range of stitch type to create different textures in her sampler. To the left of this a great house with gabled roof large central door with four panels. Between thes and below the verse a parof initials IB & MB. She then explains this " My father and Mothers names. Followed by more pairs of initials IB, JB, WB, AB, EB, DB, and SB My Brothers and sisters names. Across the base a range of potted flowers and plants with a central Dove cte and windmill. Across the very bottom the verse "Thou art my God and I will praise the lord Art my fathers God and I will exalt the.
Condition, the background linen is light brown probably its original colour. Ther is a light fold across the middle of the sampler that has caused a couple of small holes, either side of the initials IB. Another small hole above the border pattern ayt the top, mid way. Colours good, no stitch loss or colour run. The sampler has been sewn onto acid free conservation card for easy framing and protection. Size 17 1/2 x 17 inch. With so much information on the sampler we have found that Mary Beckwith was born 26 Oct 1798 Houghton Le spring Durham England. Her parents John & Mary (THe use of an I for a J was common at this period) They married 11 May 1788 again in Houghton Le Spring. The rest of the family were John (1793); James (1793) Mary, Elizabeth (1801); William (1803) Dorothy (1803) and Sarah (1808).
