BUTTERFLY MAIDEN KACHINA Artist: This Butterfly Maiden Kachina was carved by a local Hopi artist, Troy Nash. Troy signs the bottom of his works. He also engraves a wafting pipe, which he says represents his clan, Tobacco. Troy works out of his home to supplement his income. He and his wife have 3 kids. In the photo gallery, he is writing "Butterfly Maiden" on this Kachina, at our home on the Hopi "Rez". Materials: Kachinas are made from cottonwood, as is this Butterfly Maiden Kachina. The artist embellished this piece with a variety of wonderful paint hues. Size: 7 1/2 " tall, 3 3/4", 4" deep. This is a very impressive piece. Along with incorporating vibrant coloring, Troy has an extraordinary eye for detail. The camera did not do this fine Kachina the justice it deserves, and for that, I apologize. Traditional Background: The role of the Kachina among the Native people is a complex one. Although their primary goal is to amuse the audience, they are often seen giving lessons on improper behavior or a social commentary may be present in their skits and actions.
