INTRICATE SIGNED HANDCARVED MANJU WOOD~GLASS BIRD BEAD~NR

These incredible beads are from a recently acquired estate collection. Each bead is a handcarved miniature work of art in boxwood and each bead is signed by the artist. The eyes on each bead are glass and they date from the turn-of-the-century. They remind me of Japanese ojime beads and were undoubtedly carved by a master carver.

The collection was stored perfectly with each bead wrapped and secured so they are in excellent condition, with their original hand-polished and waxed lustrous shine .

This particular bead is from the Manju area, also called Manchuria. Manchuria is a historical name given to a vast geographic region in Northeast Asia. Depending on the definition of its extent, Manchuria either falls entirely within China, or is divided between China and Russia. The region is commonly referred to as Northeast China, and historically referred as Guandong, which literally means "pass East."

This region is the traditional homeland of the Xianbei, Khitan and Jurchen people, who built several dynasties in Northern China. The region is also the home of the Manchus, after whom Manchuria is named. Beginning in the 17th century, the Manchus ruled China until the collapse of the Qing Dynasty in 1911.

This bead measures approximately 21.15mm.
