1966 Irish Pearse Cased Ten Shilling Coin - PROOF GEM This auction is for a 1966 PROOF GEM Irish Ten Shilling coin which has no toning, blemishes, fingerprints or marks, and it is certainly great to obtain such a top class example. These lovely proof coins were issued without any protection or capsule and most were badly tarnished by being handled. However see the Supersized photos of the Actual Coin and CASE and judge for yourself! This Silver Ten Shilling coin is protected by a clear capsule, allowing the coin to be inspected without having to touch the coin directly. The Ten shilling coin fits snugly into the capsule, and both fit exactly into an Official Central Bank of Ireland green presentation case of the type used for the 1990 £1 coin. Padraig Pearse leader of the 1916 Easter Rebellion against British rule is shown on one side, and a statue of Cuchullain on the other. To my knowledge it is one of only three Irish coins, from 1928 to 2009, issued without the harp on one side! T were only 2,000,000 Irish Ten Shilling coins minted in 1966, and a further 20,000 proofs . They were intended for circulation but proved unpopular as they were the same diameter as the florin, and easily confused. Rising silver prices sealed their fate, and over 1,300,000 were recalled by the Central Bank and melted down for their 83.3% silver content. read more
