Extra large antique Peterson with long "house pipe" style mouthpiece

From the beginning of Kapp & Peterson's pipe-making history they offered oversized bowls and custom stems that were extra long (see catalog pages). They made few of them, and only a handful have survived. The specimen offered here, about a foot long, is much bigger than the large bowls depicted in the catalog pages shown above, and the mouthpiece is longer. Do not underestimate the mammoth size of this piece. Consider all the dimensions given below. In your hand this bowl has the heft of a cricket ball, but the perfect smoothness of a polished gem.

Stampings on the shank and silver are clear and date this pipe to 1907. The briar bears a couple of natural flaws (evident in the pictures), but fewer than you would expect in a piece of wood this size. Both sides of the bowl display what is certainly the largest expanse of birds eye grain you will ever see on a pipe. The tobacco chamber is perfectly healthy and the bowl's exterior shows no damage from use or age. The silver band is easily readable and undamaged. The stem is original to the pipe and its tenon still sports its bone extension. It fits to the shank securely and tightly. We think you'll agree this is a museum quality piece, and one of the most extraordinary Petersons in existence.
