Original and Authentic 93 Year Old Newspapers These papers are of huge interest to anyone studying the history of Ireland at the beginning of the 20th century. An Claidheamh Soluis ("The Sword of Light") was The Most Important Irish newspaper. A weekly bilingual nationalist paper - it was at the centre of many controversies over the role of Irish in the national independence movement. It preached an aggressive anti-British policy, envisaging "an Ireland leading the world against the bloody, rapacious, and soul-shivering imperialism of England". It continued until its suppression by the British Government in 1919. It was first published in the 1899 by *Conradh na Gaeilge (the Gaelic League). It was first edited by Eoin MacNeill. It aimed to provide material of general interest and sought to carry forward Douglas Hyde's policy of developing a distinctively Gaelic culture for a modern Ireland . read more
