RARE Irish Padraic Pearse An Claidhmeah Soluis 1916/17 Album Album Album RARE ! Four complete issues of this important weekly newspaper. Dated 1916 and 1917: a) September 2nd 1916 b) September 16th 1916 c) February 3rd 1917 d) February 17th 1917 Each paper (complete in itself) has 12 pages of news items, verse, songs, notes, book reviews, reports and - maybe if they were clubbed together, one page of advertisements in each copy. Original and Authentic 93 Year Old Newspapers These papers are of huge interest to anyone studying the history of Ireland at the beginning of the 20th century. An Claidheamh Soluis ("The Sword of Light") was The Most Important Irish newspaper. A weekly bilingual nationalist paper - it was at the centre of many controversies over the role of Irish in the national independence movement. It preached an aggressive anti-British policy, envisaging "an Ireland leading the world against the bloody, rapacious, and soul-shivering imperialism of England". It continued until its suppression by the British Government in 1919. It was first published in the 1899 by *Conradh na Gaeilge (the Gaelic League). It was first edited by Eoin MacNeill. It aimed to provide material of general interest and sought to carry forward Douglas Hyde's policy of developing a distinctively Gaelic culture for a modern Ireland . An Claidheamh Soluis continued under the names of Fáinne an Lae (1918-19, 1922-30) and Misneach (1919-1922) reverting briefly to An Claidheamh Soluis in 1930/31. In 1903-9, when ~ Patrick (Padraic) Pearse was editor, he made the journal into a vehicle for contemporary literature in Irish. Pearse was an Irish educationalist and barrister who later became a key figure in the Easter Rising in 1916. #The ORahilly was an admirer of Arthur Griffith , he joined Sinn Féin as well as being active in the Gaelic League. When he took over the Gaelic League's paper An Claidheamh Soluis in 1913 he reorganized it and politicised it. The first edition of the new-look paper published on the 1st of November 1913, carried the famous article "The North Began" by Eoin MacNeill, arguing for the need for an armed pro-Home-Rule force to counter-balance the anti-Home-Rule Ulster Volunteer Force. It is evident, he concluded, that the only solution now possible, is for the Empire to make terms with Ireland or to let Ireland go her own way. In any case it is manifest that all Irish people, Unionist as well as Nationalist are determined to have their own way in Ireland . Padraic Pearse summed up the feelilng at the time - "An Ulsterman with a gun is not as ridiculous as a Nationalist without one". O'Rahilly encouraged MacNeill to follow through with this idea and this led directly to foundation of Irish Volunteers. He was co-founder of the Irish Volunteers, Wynn's Hotel, Dublin , 11th November 1913 (the movement to arm Irish nationalists, forerunner of the IRA), he became treasurer. First public meeting at the Rotunda 25th November, membership rapidly grew to tens of thousands. As the Irish Volunteers grew to a national movement of 200,000 members, it came under the control of John Redmond and the Irish Parliamentary Party (against the wishes of many of the radical founders). An Claidheamh Soluis continued until its suppression by the British Government in 1919. It was an anti-parliamentarian newspaper even to the repudiation of Daniel O'Connell. It preached an aggressive anti-British policy, envisaging "an Ireland leading the world against the bloody, rapacious, and soul-shivering imperialism of England " (leading article Vol. II, No. 28).
