"Cabin Among the Pines", oil on canvas board, signed lower right, handwritten inscription "I. Sompyrac, Natchitoches Art Colony, Natchitoches, Louisiana" en verso, 9 1/2 in. x 13 1/2 in., in a period frame.
Provenance: Clinton, Iowa estate, 1983.
Note: Irma Sompyrac was born on a Northern Louisiana plantation near Grand Encore. Educated in Natchitoches at the Louisiana State Normal School and at Newcomb College in New Orleans. Upon graduation, she turned down an offer to join the faulty at Newcomb and instead went to New York to continue her studies in art. Upon returning home, Sompyrac joined with fellow artist Gladys Breazeale to establish the Natchitoches Art Colony. This delightful impressionist painting "Cabin in the Pines" reflects the influences of her Newcomb College training and the Woodward Brothers.
