Iron Cooking Set -- Cooking Grill and Cooking Rack with HooksThis is an iron cooking open fire cooking set that includes an iron cooking grill and a cooking rack to go over or beside the fire. All of these items are hand made by me at a coal fired forge at Graysburg Forge in Greene County, Tennessee. The design ideas for this set came from the cooking equipment that many of the Civil War Reenactors had at the annual Battle of Gettysburg reenactment. This is a great item for Civil War Reenactors or Pioneer Reenactors. This would also be great for campers or anyone who loves primitive open fire cooking in the woods. I'm selling these items separately sometimes, but I thought it would be nice to offer them as a set. GRILL: This grill comes completely apart for ease of packing and transport. It is very easy to assemble, and comes in 18 pieces -- 4 legs approx. 18" tall and 2 frame pieces approx. 24" long (all made using 3/8" round iron) and 12 cross pieces approx. 15" long made from 1/4" round iron. The legs are driven into the ground a few inches. As seen in the picture, the grill is meant to be put up over a hole where you build your fire. This allows you to control how close the fire is below the grill. The cross pieces are finished with beeswax. I will finish the rest of the pieces with clear lacquer, or on request with a traditional beeswax finish or flat black paint. The cross pieces are attached to the frame piece with a loop, so they are secure. The cross pieces slide freely on the frame piece and are completely adjustable from one end to the other. On a customer's recommendation, I point the ends of the cross pieces so they could also be used as skewers. Spread them out for a large pan, move them to opposite ends for cooking at the fire's edge, or space them as you want to grill a hot dog or a steak. After another suggestion from a customer who wanted to make sure the sides of the grill didn't spread, on two of the cross pieces I put a loop at both ends. Put one of these pieces at each end of your grill to make it even sturdier. I'm always open to suggestions from my customers! This is YOUR CUSTOM IRONWORK! I guarantee your neighbor doesn't have one (yet)! This is a very simple and beautiful design for a grill. It is very heavy and sturdy and as long as you sink the legs it's not going anywhere. I've pictured a Dutch oven on it for demonstration. **Dutch oven is not included with the grill**. The grill is easily big enough for two pots or a pot and an iron frying pan. COOKING RACK: The cooking rack is made from 3 pieces of 3/8" iron, with two upright pieces @ 40" tall and a cross piece @ 40" long. You can drive the uprights into the ground on each side of your fire. It is strong enough to hold a pot on an S hook and your other cooking implements. Two 3/8" S hooks and the one longer J hook are included with the rack, similar to those hooks pictured. The rack and hooks are finished with clear lacquer, or on request with a traditional beeswax finish or flat black paint. The design I use for the cooking rack allows you to convert it easily into a small tripod to hang your pot. This Iron Cooking Set is entirely hand made using the same tools and techniqes used by generations of American Blacksmiths. These would be great for Civil War or other historical re-enactors, campers, boy scouts, girl scouts, hunters, or anyone interested in open fire outdoor cooking! If you like hand crafted ironwork that LOOKS like hand crafted ironwork, complete with hammer strikes and a not-too-perfect antique look, you will LOVE this set. There might be slight variations in hooks and design details based on upgrades and improvements to the ironwork, but the overall design is the same as pictured.
