This is a very nice specimen of the Sikhote-Alin meteorite. Sikhote-Alin fell on February 12, 1947 at 10:38 AM in Siberia, Russia. A massive fireball streaked over all of Eastern Russia and was seen by tens of thousands of people.
A very famous painter, Medvedev was just sitting down to paint a village scene when the fireball passed overhead. He immediately painted what he saw, which is now forever memorialized in a postage stamp issued by Russia on the 10th anniversary of the meteorite fall. This meteorite was asteroid size, it is estimated to have weighed several HUNDRED TONS on entry, and many tons have been recovered. It impacted deep in the forests of the Sikhote-Alin mountains, and created many craters. The meteorite exploded many times, high in the atmosp, so thousands of pieces rained destruction on the forest. Hundreds of trees w blown down and shredded by the metal shards like bomb shrapnel, thus the name for the twisted ripped pieces found. Some pieces are individuals, complete pieces that burned high up, and show the typical regmaglypts of iron meteorites. The shrapnel pieces are shredded metal, ripped apart by the unimaginable force of air pressure on a body moving at over 15000 miles per hour! This is incredible to imagine the forces needed to shred solid iron just from AIR! I have acquired a few nice peices, this is one of them. This specimen weighs 38.30 grams. It is flight-oriented, a very nice shield-shaped piece. It measures 35 mm by 28 mm by 15 mm. It is a superb specimen, with flow lines emenating from the shield face The flow lines on this meteorite are spectacular. I estimate this piece to be valued at well over $250.00. Sikhote-Alin is one of the most important and largest meteorite falls in history, it is one of the few witnessed iron falls ever available to collectors, and it is a large crater-forming meteorite. An impact of this magnetude over a large city could kill tens of thousands of people in a split second! Anyway, Sikhote-Alin is an absolute must for ANY meteorite collection, and the low prices of the last year make it a bargain that will soon fade as supplies dwindle. Be sure to see me in the March 1999 issue of the Smithsonian Magazine, I am featured in an article about meteorite hunters! I am also featured in Fortune Small Business magazine.
