A BEAUTIFUL ITALIAN CITY SCAPE ISRAEL SILVESTRE French 1621-1691 “TERME DIOCLETIANE” DESCRIPTION OF PRINTS: Very typical of the work of Silvestre. A view of a plaza with 3 churches described. Chieza di St. Bernardo, Chieza di st. Susanna and La Madona delli Angeli. Across the bottom of the etching, Grave par Israel Sylvestre, P. Mariette Ex, and Avec privilege du Roy. 6 in the bottom right corner. The paper is 8 5/8” wide x 5” high. The image is 7 5/8” wide x 4 1/2” high. CONDITION OF PRINT : This print is in very good condition. There are remnants of some glue on the reverse, in four spots as if it had been mounted to something before. There is a penciled stock number across the bottom of the reverse of the page. There is a stamp of some kind on the reverse. Israel Silvestre (Nancy, 13 August 1621 – 11 October 1691 in Paris), called the Younger to distinguish him from his father, was a prolific French draftsman, etcher and print dealer who specialized in topographical views and perspectives of famous buildings. Orphaned at an early age, he was taken in by his uncle in Paris, Israel Henriet, an etcher and print-seller, and friend of Jacques Callot. Between 1630 and 1650 Silvestre travelled widely in France, Spain and Italy, which he visited three times, and later worked up his sketches as etchings, which were sold singly and read more
