These is a superior grain Italian briar "bent" stem block pipe. Take this block of briar and shape it into any pipe you like.
Pre-drilled with stem already fitted ready for your imagination.
All you have to do is carve the briar bowl! You can even smoke them as is! How should you carve it? Any way you want! Be creative! This is a fun way to explore the possibilities of pipe shape and design as well as gain a respect for the master carvers around the world.
Please note that ALL Briar is subject to grain pattern fluctuations and possible internal or external flaws such as sand pits, cracks or holes. This is common knowledge to any carver. This pipe is in smokeable condition. Most carvers regard workable flaws as an opportunity to use a rich dark stain, or to rusticate the pipe. Worse flaws are frequently worked around by changing the design. These pipes blanks are great learning tools and will perhaps be the best pipe you've ever smoked.
The following information is very general, but a good start to researching how to make your pipe. Some tools I use include several textures of hand files and almost all grits of sandpaper, a simple carving knife, and a rotary tool (like a Dremel). Did I mention sand paper?
When you carve this pipe, shape options are limitless. You can create a traditional shape, a figure, a relief nature scene, animal or figure head or maybe the United States Marine Corps Eagle, Globe and Anchor. It is recommended you start by making a replica out of clay to before carving the wood. Clay is more forgiving..
Professional recommend you cover your pipe stem with masking tape and leave the stem in the pipe when carving. When the shape is all done and sanded, with it's own sheen, you are ready to stain it. Do not use water based stains. Use only alcohol soluble stains (denatured alcohol). Buff the pipe with Tripoli starting with green and finishing with white, or medium to fine. After that, use Carnauba wax (available in blocks) for the final shine. When it comes to the final buff, a Variable speed (slow) is best. Buffing should be easy if the proper waxes are used. Avoid over buffing, or the grain will come out in relief.
Those are just very general suggestions. T is some fantastic information and books on pipe making. Let me know if I can suggest some sites I buy my supplies from.
