IN THIS AUCTION we are honored to offer a beautiful reliquary of Saint Agnes of Rome, Virgin and Martyr. The Theca has an ornately designed border. Inside the relic of Saint Agnes rests on a bright red satin background surrounded by golden paper roles. The back reveals the wax seal and threads intact. This Reliquary measures 1 ½ inches (3.5 cm) square. From our research we paraphrase: SAINT AGNES OF ROME was born in the 3rd Century. At the age of 12 or 13 Agnes was ordered to sacrifice to pagan gods and lose her virginity by rape. She was taken to a Roman temple and when led to the altar she made the sign of the Cross. She was threatened, and then tortured when she refused to turn against God. When several young men offered to marry her, she said that to do so would be an insult to her heavenly Spouse and that she would keep her consecrated virginity intact. She was tortured to death either by beheading, stabbing, or burning (sources vary). Her bones are conserved in Church Sant' Agnese fuori le mura in Rome, built over the Catacomb that housed Saint Agnes' tomb. She is patron Saint (among others) for betrothed couples, bodily purity, chastity, rape victims and the Girl Scouts. This object is allowed as it contains no human remains.
