Vintage Italian Sterling Silver Powder compact, marked '925' in an oval, and what appears to be 'ROMA', for Italy. There is one missing gem on the top. There is tarnish, the puff is old, the screen has a small hole. There is some powder residue. We think the gem may be a synthetic ruby, and could be replaced. The compact weighs 81.1 grams. (With screen and puff inside)The top has a filigree design medallion, of gold-plate, with a blue underlay. The gold part appears to have been hand chased. It is hard to describe how elegant this item is, how high the quality is, and how unique it is.The outside finish is florentined, a very expensive and laborious process that is only used on the best pieces. The mirror is in excellent shape, and is beveled, something that is only found in the better compacts. The closure is tight and the hinges are secure. The top stays open when being used.We have had this item for many, many years. It is from a family estate, but we do not know any more about it.
