The fieldwork is stitched 1/2 inch apart. the sewing or stitching on the backside is done in 10-12 stitches per inch. Yes, the white between the colored blocks is stuffed and the filling is natural cotton. No, the berries never had colored fabric on them, they are not stuffed because they are tufts of twisted cotton, sewn and outlined with white and brown thread. The two holes are on the back in a corner and are both about the size of quarters. These would be in the white backing, and would be an easy repair. The applied leaf shapes are sewn with approx. 25 stitches per inch. The leaves and vines are stuffed. The vines are stuffed with natural cotton twisted and sewn under the green fabric. One leaf of green shows a 1/4 inch size wear spot but is minor for the age. T is a short segment 2 inches long of green vine that needs to be restitched. T is an old repair done on one of the berries and it was done in blue thread. It looks as if a tremendous amount of time and care went into the stitching of this quilt. Thank you for your questions.. Mike Additional information for questions asked... I looked this over again, the stitching that is on top goes through to the backside.(Sewn through).. When I hold it up to a bright light I see the fill between the top and bottom. Now when you say puffy and stuffed. The area inside the stitched pattern is puffy and some of it is stuffed but not like what I found on the internet, like you are saying. The description I found that more closely matches this quilts stitching is this... "In trapunto, the quilter sews lines of stitches through the quilt sandwich (the quilt top, the batting, and the quilt backing) with a running stitch. It looks like this: - - - - - - - -. The stitching line outlines flowers, leaves, feathers, vases, or other motifs in the pattern. Sometimes extra batting or other stuffing material, like cotton, is placed inside a motif as it is outlined with stitches. " This I would say, that t is extra batting (All the little leaves and vines are stuffed)! And the rest of the description matches it! Three additional pictures are added to show this detail.
