Marine Corps Coin & Stamp Set
For 230 years, the men and women of the United States Marine Corps have stood for those who could not stand. They have fought and died to protect the freedoms we all enjoy. Imbued with courage and resolve, a Marine can be counted on to bear any burden, at home or abroad, in defense of liberty.
Included in this handsome limited-edition set are a satin finish uncirculated Marine Corps 230th Anniversary Silver Dollar and an original 3-cent Iwo Jima postage stamp, issued by the then United States Post Office Department in 1945. Both the obverse of the coin and the stamp carry a rendition of the flag raising image as seen through the lens of Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal atop Mount Suribachi on the Japanese Island of Iwo Jima, February 23, 1945. It is believed to be the most reproduced image in the history of photography.
The coin's reverse features an engraving of the Eagle, Globe and Anchor, official emblem of the United States Marine Corps. Today's emblem has remained virtually unchanged since 1868, when United States Secretary of the Navy, Gideon Welles approved the design as recommended by Brigadier General Commandant Jacob Zeilin.
The United States Mint is proud to offer this limited-edition coin and stamp set to pay tribute to the remarkable history of the United States Marine Corps.
No more than 50,000 of these sets will be sold.
Metal composition of the coin is 90% silver and 10% copper. The coin's diameter is 1.5 inches and it weighs 26.73 grams. Will not be in stock until Aug 10, 2005. A $2.00 insurance fee is required please add to the shipping/handling charges.
