These are the J. B. Hirsch 1930 art deco "Lady in Waiting" pot metal bookends on lovely marble bases and they are in great condition. They are made in tribute to the ivory and bronze lady bookends coming out of high end art deco Paris in the 1920's. Hirsch took that concept and made pot metal with celluloid or fake ivory face bookends for the rest of the world. These are guaranteed old, genuine and original. They measure over 7 inches tall and weigh 8 pounds the pair. They have the original polychrome painted finish in the most wonderful colors of celadon or light jade green with ivory. The lady has handpainted sky blue eys, honey blonde hair in curls or ringlets, and red, red lips. Her gown has long golden ribbons, her slippers have golden bows and her mutton sleeves have golden trim. Look at the cascading ruffles on her gown and sleeves, beautiful. She carries a fan in her lap and wears ballroom gloves. In fact, this lady looks as if she is at a ball in the 18th century and is waiting to be asked to dance. Her low cut bodice on her dress displays her ivory or celluloid breasts and cleavage to advantage. It is very rare indeed to find this set in this fine a conditon with intact chest, face and fan. And even the marble bases, richly veined in charcoal and ivory on black, have no damage. These are guaranteed old, genuine and original and they are collection worthy in this conditon. You can find these identified in the antique bookend reference guide by Kuritzky, "The Encyclopedia of Bookends", page 195, Plate 1278, called WAIT , dated to 1925, attributed to Hirsch, and given the highest rarity rating, a 5. Thanks for looking.

Please see my other auctions for more antique and vintage cast metal bookends and doorstops that I will combine on shipping whenever possible.
