This is a big gun (18in) Y-level and original pine box by Joseph Sala, one of only a few listed San Francisco makers. Sala partnered with John Roach, an earlier San Fran maker until Roach's death in 1891and then continued the business until his own demise in 1916. As noted in Smarts listing of American instrument makers, Sala became an agent for W. & L. E. Gurley and this fact is included on a label inside the lid of the instrument box. A second later label indicates the instrument was serviced by Lietz. The level is in good working order with sharp focus and intact cross hairs. The underslung level vial is intact and full. A previous owner has overcleaned the brass fittings on the scope but the supporting structure and leveling base have not been so treated. The base has 4x 11 tpi threading and t is no tripod. The box shows plenty of age and use and the carrying strap is missing. An interesting piece from a historical perspective. It survived the San Francisco fire! Mail cost post sale, no PayPal.
