On the day of the judging, 24 tables were lined up in rows. The tables w filled with all the whiskeys in the competition. The judges moved slowly from whiskey to whiskey, tasting each, but being careful not to swallow the whiskey inside. They would then rinse their mouths with very cold water before moving to the next competitor. As the afternoon drew on, all but 15 distilleries were eliminated. Each whiskey was sampled again, until finally the judges were ready to announce their decision. One of the English judges, Henry Hoctor, stepped forward and proclaimed in dramatic tones "Gentlemen the Gold Medal for the world's finest whiskey goes to Jack Daniel Distillery,Lynchburg, not Virginia, but Lynchburg in Tennessee." When the excitement of the fair had subsided, Jack returned to Lynchburg to celebrate his new won fame. read more
