~~ PRIVATE AUCTION ~~ Vintage Doeskin Turn of the Century French Walking Coat. Top quality 1900's French Melton wool coat-jacket with genuinely stunning line and shape. Not to be confused with inferior later models or the particularly dull 'morning' or 'frock' coat of the 30's and 40's. Original fabric covered flat buttons. Two on each cuff. Two above pleated split tail. Hidden pockets in the tail which are lined in dark olive green polished cotton. Raw edge to this coat which shows the high quality of the wool and the wonderful weight. Beautifully sculpted back. Fully silk-satin lined and padded chest. Two interior chest pockets. Two lapel button holes. All button holes are tightly hand bound. Condition is excellent for age considering this fabric is particularly appealing to les moths! There is one tiny 1mm hole to the front and right shoulder, some light surface moth grazing to asmall area of the left arm and small area of the side/back of the tail. The damage does not affect the structure or wearability of the coat and as the fabric is so dark and dense is not easily noticed. The coat has been very recently dry cleaned. Shown for context on a standard 38" chest mannequin and clearly it is very tight, would be an ideal fit on a 36" chest unless this look is preferred.
