Jacobus Stainer Model Full Size Violin 1716 Lion Head Scroll 2 Bows Hard Case Item Description No, this is not an original Jacobus Stainer violin, but a nice German copy nonetheless. Probably made in the 1870s to 1890s period. Just picked it up at an estate sale. What a great looking piece. And, how about that Lion's Head Scroll?! Nicely carved and even has a its' tongue painted red. The label is damaged on the left side as can be seen in the label picture. The soundpost is up. Again, this is not an original Stainer, but a German reproduction of one of his styles made over 120 years ago. Some information on Stainer from an online source (/vlnmkrs.tmln.html0: Tyrolean School Jacobus Stainer (b.1620 - d.1683) The greatest maker of the German school of violin-making, Jacobus Stainer originally worked for Herz, the famous organ builder, before settling on the profession for which he is now famous. Few makers have been more abundantly copied. Said to have been a pupil of Nicolaus Amati, Stainer's violins were first offered for sale in the late 1630's. Pupils of note include Mattias Albani (1654), and members of the Klotz family (1670 - 1700). Highly original, Stainer's instruments, although typically small in pattern, exhibit strong edges with purfling set rather near them, well-cut f-holes, and are far more highly arched than Cremonese instruments, especially between the upper bouts. The backs reflect more curvature than the bellies, with the summit of the arch almost as wide in dimension as the bridge. The scroll is often ornately finished with a carved lion's or animal's head, otherwise, they were left blunt and rather short. So, yes why do they even put a date on it that was after his death as opposed to using a year for one of his styles. Been buying and selling for 35 years and have not figured that one out yet! I do not play, but know enough to be able to draw a bow across the strings to check out the sound a violin makes, and boy this one does have very nice sound to it. One of the finer violin shops in the Philadelphia area closed in the past few years. Per a card in there, this violin was serviced at William Moennig & Son (Ken Jacobs) sometime in the past. A couple of other names are on the note card as well. A David Forbes of Florida and a David Lypman. My guess is that the fixed crack along the one f hole running back to the bridge was addressed then.
