Rare jacquard George Washington 1871 coverlet 5 vivid colors Excellent example of jacquard coverlet measures 66”wide and 78” long. The four corner scenes depicted in this coverlet include the bust of George Washington over a banner reading,”Washington” over an eagle over the words, “Hail,” and “1871.” Designs also have flowers, leaves, double handled urns with flowers, and doves. The colors in the coverlet include an ecru color, red, blue, green, purple, and black. The background has a geometric and basket weave design. The center medallion is floral. Some wear to back side where the woven grey thread is loose, minimal wear and staining. Edge fringe has some loss. I think that the base ecru color of the coverlet is probably cotton, and am sure that the 5 colors are wool. Only 3 sides have fringe. No holes, no fabric loss, no mold, mildew, or offensive odors. I am not a textile expert so please ask any further questions you may have. This coverlet is being sold with no reserve to the highest bidder. Winning bidder pays shipping and insurance. Payment must be made within 3 days of the close of this auction or it will be relisted. Please ask any questions before you bid. Thanks for looking! Question: Hi Aim Can you please describe better what/how much "minimal damage" means to you such as WHERE are damage areas lcoated, HOW BIG are they, HOW MANY etc so I underrstand better you refer to. Also are colors vibrant or faded, cannot tell what is camera flash or not. What percent are fringes good? Thank you! Answer: "Minimal staining" I stated can be more specific by stating that edge discoloration is as follows: 1 edge w/ fringe has light brown discoloration on the top side of ecru color background. 1 spot is on a short end with fringe & extends 1 1/2" from the outside & is 2 1/2" long. Other noticeable spots are as follows: 1 is on bottom side of the ecru color & 1" in diameter between the "Washing" and "ton" banner. Other areas of slight discoloration on bottom side are on areas where the coverlet has been folded over the years, which could probably be cleaned but I was leary about laundering this because of the wool. There are also 2 very light pin head size marks of discoloration on 2 longer sides, 1 extending from the edge 7" into the center and the other side measuring from the outside edge measuring 11" to the inside. Both areas are no wider than 1/2" and look like they could be light spots of rust from touching something in a cedar chest while folded up over the years. Top side has a bit darker discoloration along purple & black outside basketweave design rows that begin at outside edge & extend half way across the longer length of the coverlet. There is also a brown spot on the top side about 1/2" in diameter in a corner above the "Hail" banner. All spots are only noticeable on very close inspection. Most of the fringe loss is in purple colored thread. There are virtually only nubs of fringe in the purple color. The blue fringe has about 50% loss & the black fringe has about 30% loss. All other colors of fringe are present, being heavier on the long side & lighter on the shorter 2 sides. The edge with no fringe has the seam on the ecru background side, which I believe, makes this the backside. "Minimal wear" is mostly on the top side and in the stripes of the purple wool likely because of material used for dye. Most of this wear only shows on top side. Where there is loss of the wool, grey thread is present and loose in areas. The colors are vibrant, more so on the top side where weave is more exposed.
