THIS AUCTION CONTAINS A DUKE TOBACCO COMPANY PUBLISHED ALBUM CARDS, CIRCA 1889, TITLED, "HERO'S OF THE CIVIL WAR". BOOKLETS WERE DISTRIBUTED IN PACKAGES OF THEIR CIGARETTES. THIS SERIES WAS SO POPULAR THAT THEY COMBINED ALL 50 INDIVIDUAL CARD BOOKLETS, IN A COMPLETE ALBUM, WHICH COULD BE OBTAINED FROM DUKE TOBACCO CO., WITH A SUBMISSION 75-100 OF PROOF OF PURCHASE COUPONS AND A SMALL DOLLAR AMOUNT. IN THIS AUCTION A INDIVIDUAL CARD IS BEING OFFERED FROM THE ALBUM. THESE MEASURE APPROXIMATELY 5 X 7 INCHES IN SIZE WITH THE BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY OF EACH GENERAL OR ADMIRAL APPEARING OF THE REVERSE SIDE. (THE EXACT SAME INFORMATION THAT WAS IN THE BOOKLET). THE RE ARE A TOTAL OF 50 ALBUM CARDS, 25 CONFEDERATE AND 25 UNION IN THE TOTAL SERIES. *"A28 - The Heroes of the Civil War - W. Duke Sons & Co. Tobacco. Souvenir Albums of this type were probably intended to replace the individual tobacco cards if the smoker desired. They were purchased with 75 to 100 coupons packed with cigarettes. This album was issued in 1889 with the images and extensive text of card series Histories of Generals (Burdick 78). Gorgeous illustrated pages pair a Union and CSA general.
