C A T A L O N I A General description of Map: Magnific copper map of Catalonia by Janssonius. The map shows a part of Aragon and Valencia as well as the entire Coast-line of Cataluña. Two nice cartouches, one with the scale and one with the name. Very good contemporary hand colouring. Ca. 1666 from his "Atlas Novus". Jan Jansson was the son of a bookseller and publisher, maried the daughter of Jodocus Hondius in 1612 -hence the remarkable similarity between Hondius and Janssonius maps, some hardly recognizable. From 1633, Jan worked with his brother in law Henricus Hondius and issued the Atlas he is famous for. Many of the maps were re-drawn or replaced gradually, the Atlas became the Atlas Novus, which was the rival of Blaeu´s Atlas Major because of its size and quality. Condition: Leaf is browned throughout, pin-hole sized worm holes at lower margin, none affecting engraved surface, minor folding split affecting image but hardly noticeable, excellent contemporary hand colouring, back with Latin text, some foxing spots and t, slight loss of paper affecting image, just a tiny bit and does not affect the map, excellent margins, very good condition overall Size: 560mm x 478mm We do not sell reproductions, all items guaranteed genuine and from the time and authors called for.
