VA L E N T I A R E G N V M Coteftani . Ptol . Edentani Plin . General description of Map: Magnific copper map of Valencia, one of the oldest parts of Spain. The map shows the entire coast line, a magnific cartouche, sea monsters and ships. Valencia is located over the Mediterranean sea . Contemporary hand colouring. From Janssonius Atlas Novus, ca. 1666, Amsterdam, Latin text on back. Jan Jansson was the son of a bookseller and publisher, maried the daughter of Jodocus Hondius in 1612 -hence the remarkable similarity between Hondius and Janssonius maps, some hardly recognizable. From 1633, Jan worked with his brother in law Henricus Hondius and issued the Atlas he is famous for. Many of the maps were re-drawn or replaced gradually, the Atlas became the Atlas Novus, which was the rival of Blaeu´s Atlas Major because of its size and quality. Condition: Lower margin has small worm holes not affecting text, middle folding split affecting image, some oxidation, excellent contemporary hand colouring, Latin text on back, remargination on both left and right sides, mainly marginal stains, broad margins, very good condition overall Size: 565mm x 480mm We do not sell reproductions, all items guaranteed genuine and from the time and authors called for.
