Japan Popy Bandai Chogokin Marmit GX-04 UFO Robo Grendizer History: In the early 70's the parent company Bandai spun off the toy division Popy and allowed them to utilize an unproven toy material for Japan-- die cast metal. That zinc based metal soon gained the trade name "Chogokin" or super metal alloy. In the late 70's the United States was introduced to this masterful company with the "Shogun Warriors" toy line. Mattel re-packaged and distributed an assortment of the Chogokin super-robots throughout the states. Popy robots are often considered to be jewelry-like in their refinement and represent the pinnacle in engineering for die cast engineering in Japan . Much of the paintwork utilizes at least 4 colors and has an exacting glossy polished appearance. Chrome parts, transforming mechanisms, shooting fists, swords, axes, hidden compartments, and even magnets are used throughout the line. DX or deluxe versions of Popy Japan toys were re-released in the United States (1984-1986) under the brand name of Godaikin (see the Godaikin picture index). Godaikins are nearly identical to the Popy, Japan releases. The Soul of Chogokin series was originally unveiled by Bandai in early 1997. Designed to appeal mainly to nostalgic adults rather than children, and featuring price tags to match, the gimmick-packed Soul of Chogokin diecasts are among the most exquisite versions of famous giant robot designs ever produced. The item currently up for auction is a Bandai Chogokin GX-04 UFO Robo Grendizer fully posable die-cast metal Action Figure. In the instruction sheet for this item, Goh Nagai, the creator of Glendizer, is shown grinning proudly as he holds one of these, and it's no mystery why. Bandai truly pulled out all the stops when they created this masterpiece of a toy for grown-ups!Three main parts that can be enjoyed separately or docked together are what makes this Glendizer set so much fun. You get Glendizer himself, of course, which is about 70% die-cast metal for a super-hefty feel. The shoulders, neck, elbows, hips and knees are fully posable. In addition, the legs are telescoping so the length can be adjusted for mounting him in the "Spazer" ship. His neck is double-jointed so he can look straight forward even when mounted prone in the ship, too. His arms are removable via magnetic mounts and you get the regular posable arms, plus the spring-loaded type for firing his "screw crusher punch" attack (special arm/hand parts included for this, too!). Three sets of interchangeable hands (fists, open palm, and weapon-gripping) are included so you can create the perfect look, or have him grip the "double harken" weapon or his shoulder-mounted boomerangs (removable). The all-plastic Spazer ship opens up front and back to let Glendizer dock with it, and has two removable saucers on the wing tips with opening panels to allow you to duplicate the "spin saucer" and "drill saucer" weapons. Landing feet also fold out of the bottom of the ship for stable display on flat surfaces. And then t's the metal and plastic Double Spazer fighter ship with posable wings, a repositionable nose and deployable docking arm to allow a magnetic mounting on Glendizer's back to form the "combination cross." Some minor assembly of fins and other small parts is required, but no cement or paint is needed. To top everything off, you get a display stand that lets you keep Glendizer and all his myriad accessories together in one spot. They have really thought of everything! This is truly one item that no fan of Japanese robot culture will want to be without!
