This Early Meiji (c. 1880) vintage Japanese Imari bowl was all hand made 130 to 150 years ago. Signed on the bottom by the Meiji Era artist who created it (see picture 4 & 5), It was painted with three main glazes and a final gold firing. It was fired several times (clay firing as well as two enamel firings) in a wood fired kiln at a high temperature making it very durable. This multi-color form of imari is known as "akaimari" because of the cadmium red (akai). With the exception of some light wear to the gold (mostly around the rim) it is in excellent condition . The designs feature a phoenix in flight (symbol of the comming of a time of peace, prosperity and enlightenment) as well as peoni flowers (symbols of prosperity). Measures 6 " in diameter by 2" high (15 x 5 cm). You'll love it...............I guarantee it!
