An unusual Japanese netsuke carved of elephant ivory of an acrobat standing on his hands with his feet together in the front, measuring 2 ins. in height, dating to the Meiji period (1868-1912). The acrobat has shell inlaid eyes. The netsuke-shi: EISEN, who has signed the piece in a reserve, has done a great job of creating balance in this piece so that it will stand on its own, while showing the strain on the acrobat’s face from maintaining one position for over a century! The netsuke has a great patina of age and some small, sealed age cracks that do not affect the structural integrity.
