ANOTHER, NEWER, 47 RONIN, MASTERLESS SAMURAI SOMAYAKI SIGNED AND INSCRIBED SAKE CUP. IT CAME FROM THE FAMOUS TEMPLE W THE 47 SAMURAI ARE BURIED, NAMED 'SEN GAKU JI'. THIS IS ABOUT THE MOST FAMOUS STORY IN JAPAN AND IF YOU LOOK ON THE WWW, YOU WILL FIND IT. CHUSHINGURA WAS A FAMOUS TV SERIES ON THAT LASTED A FULL YEAR! IT HAS A WELL DEVELOPED HIBIYAKI, GOLD KANJI LETTERING /SEN GAKU JI' AND THE GOLD RUNNING HORSE AND A GOLD RIM. IT IS SIGNED ON THE BOTTOM. IT IS IN MINT, AS NEW CONDITION, SINCE IT IS NEW. I looked all over for another and somebody told me to just GO back to SEN GAKKU JI Temple and ask them if they have any! So, I did and they did. The antique one from before was missing the famous running horse and this one has it, so in a way, it is better. The cup is in a rarely seen form for this type cup and it is nearly 2 1/2 inches wide at the bottom area and 2 inches tall. Below is a little I found on the WWW about these cups, and they ARE a great invention. The first 'Hot Pot' type idea. The Heart Shaped Cutouts ventilate and cool the outer shell too. Somayaki is characterized by the ao-hibi, or blue-green crackling (Hibiyaki) that covers the surface. An apple ash and sumi-kannyu glaze is used to achieve this effect. Usually Somayaki can also be recognized by the hashiri-uma, or galloping horse motif. This motif is said to have been requested by a feudal lord in the mid-1600's, to show pride in the region's ability to breed and train quality horses. Perhaps the most distinguishing design feature of Soma ware is the double-walled construction. The inner and outer pieces are thrown separately by the potter, and allowed to dry and firm for a short period. The inner piece is then mated to the outer piece. This design not only keeps the liquid inside hot, but also the outer surface cool, allowing one to easily hold the vessel. Please check to see what else I can find that is unusual wandering around Japan.
