This is an authentic Japanese Army Officers Sword/Katana. The tang is signed by the maker. This sword is 37 3/8" overall with a 26 3/4" blade. The blade is in good to excellent condition and is quite sharp. This excellent katana is signed by the maker named Kane Masa. His signature is very similar to the signature on page 45 in Slough's book "Modern Japanese Swordsmiths 1868-1945". The blade is dated 1945. This sword is an excellent example of the late war Army Officers Sword as seen on pages 78-82 "Japanese Military Swords And Dirks" by Fuller and Gregory. The handle(Suka) is wrapped in the distinctive Battle Pattern(Katemaki) which exposes the two menuki. The Menuki or hilt ornaments, are iron, Shin Gunto style kadosakura(Crysanthemum). The scabbard(Saya) of this sword is steel with a wooden liner and is an olive green color. The fittings of the sword and scabbard are flat black iron and the scabbard fittings have a somewhat stippled pattern. The grip, rayskin(Same) underneath and the cord wrapping(ito) over it, are tight and in good condition. The blade does have some pitting close to the habaki which appear to be flaws from the maker. The handle rayskin has been slightly damaged around the peg(mekugi) holes from removing and replacing the pegs. This handle is held on with pegs, not the two screws which most of these handles came
