A vintage Japanese Buddhist prayer bell set, Orin for the Butsudan. This set includes a pillow and striker to accompany the Orin. My family recently imported these authentic items directly from Japan. This nice old set dates to the early 1900's. This prayer bell is made of brass. It is worn from obvious age/use, but still rings a long pretty tone. I believe the note is C. This fairly large bell measures about 3 inches tall and 6 inches in diameter. The wooden striker is in good condition. It measures 5 1/4 inches long. The pillow is newer and very colorful . It measures about 6 1/4 inches in diameter and 1 5/8 inches tall/thick. Orin are prayer bells always present in Buddhist Temples and sounded by Monks to mark the beginning of Sutra (prayers and chants). They, of course, are also used by Buddhist lay persons in their homes during daily worship and often displayed in the family Butsudan. This beautiful old set is in very good condition, especially considering the vintage.
