Japanese hanging scroll / Haiku by Issa HAND-WRITING on silk . MOUNTING: brocade lined with paper (seems to have been reinforced the upper part of the reverse with paper in the past 30-40 years). AGE :19th c.. ARTIST : Kobayashi Issa ( 1763 - 1827). SIZE of mounting(which means approx. total Width x Length of this scroll): 49.9 x 117.8cm. MEANING of Haiku : How wonderful our country is ! Even nameless weeds come into lovely flowers. It's really a paradise. PRONUNCIATION in Japanese : WaGa-KuNi-Wa KuSa-Sa-E-Sa-Ki-Nu O-TeN-GoKu. COMMENTs : 1)HAIKU is a traditional Japanese poem consisting of seventeen-syllables (5+7+5=17), commenced by Basho (1644 -1694). 2) Kobayashi Issa ( 1763 - 1827 / one of the Great Four Haiku Masters i.e. Matsuo Basho, Yosa Buson, Kobayashi Issa and Masaoka Shiki) .
