JAPANESE STERLING SILVER SALT & PEPPER SET You are looking at a delightful, and usable, salt and pepper set. It is a model of a Japanese hibachi brazier: the firepit is an open salt and the water pot is a pepper shaker. The hibachi was made to resemble barrel construction: vertical planks held together with bamboo straps. The hibachi has 4 elongated feet shaped in traditional form. The pepper shaker lifts out of the hibachi for use and has a perforated lid that pulls off for filling. The salt has its original glass liner which is shaped to fit the hibachi exactly. It is made of solid sterling (925 grade) silver. It is marked STERLING but is probably 950 grade like most other Japanese pieces (the Sterling is t to comply with US laws).T is also a maker's mark YUAN SHUN. This is a mystery to me because it looks more like a Chinese mark. If anyone has an explanation please let me know. It is 1 7/8" wide x 1 3/8" deep x 1 5/8" high. It is in excellent condition - no dents. Shipping depends on destination. Insurance is required and depends on price and is charged at USPS rates.
