Background information Just as a little bit of background- for many years I was the divisional VP for the company that represented Rawlings in Canada. We later acquired the Cooper brand and at one point were right behind Louisville in terms of wooden bat sales. We shipped about 8-10,000 pcs to the Major league teams and about three times that volume to A, AA, and AAA teams. While I was in the far east last year, I stumbled upon a three year old bat factory making bats exclusively for the Japanese pro leagues. Knowing a little bit about bats I was impressed by their equipment, by their wood selection, drying capabilities, finish and by the quality. As of now they have not supplied anyone in North America with their product. Sort of caught my interest The key difference between what they do and the way most factories on this side of the pond operate is the way they buy the raw wood billets. Most factories over buy and only get about 10% MLB quality, about 15-20% minor league (A AA AAA) and the balance is used at retail. My guess is that the teams in most league don't always (maybe never ) get good quality wood from guys like H & B or Rawlings, etc. They really can't because they are limited in the way they buy the wood and they probably read more
