This is an antique lidded sugi (cryptomeria) wooden box from the mid-Edo Era (1808). This box was most likely used to contain precious items, as the writing on the top of the lid says, "bowl". This box shows great craftsmanship in its construction. It is made using hardened hinoki wooden pegs (see picture 11).On the bottom of the box, there is a signature of its date and previous owner: August Bunka 6th year (Edo era, 1808), owned by Izawa Rokuemon (see picture 5).It has been well used yet well loved, and still has all of its original deep warm patina that over two centuries of loving use could provide. With exception to a warm aged patina and small damage (see picture 10), this box remains in fine original condition .This box measures 9" in cube (23 cm). A very warm accent for your home or office. Great to hold small valuables. Please enjoy the enlarged pictures to get a full appreciation of the fine sugi wood and its two century plus old original patina. You'll love it, I guarantee it.........If you purchase this item and are not completely delighted with it, you may return it for a no questions asked refund within 14 days of receipt.Sailerking and the Shogun's Gallery have been in the Japanese antique business for over 32 years, and highly value our customers.
