This is Japanese tanto in mountings. The blade is signed " Kanetomo ", sun-nobi hira-zukuri shape. T are several generation Kanetomo in Seki school and this blade is done by one of well known Kanetomo who worked in muromachi period Ca. 1550. The blade is in old polish condition and shows minor scratch on surface but nothing deep. The temper line shows wild big choji (or kenbo midare) temper pattern throughout the blade and has healthy deep temper ( jizou boshi ) at the point. T are nicely done bohi engravings on both side of the blade. The forging is tight o-itame hada and has one minor rust marks or forging grain on surface (shows in the photo). The file marks shows higaki yasurime (chris cross). This is good example of mino-seki tanto made by well known smith. T is no bend, no nicks and the cutting edge is sharp. The blade measures 12 1/4" cutting edge, 1 1/8" width at the notch and 20 1/2" in mountings. The blade is in old lacquerd scabbard. The handle is tight fit with matched iron fuchi /kashira with iron menuki. The tsuba is old iron tanto tsuba with silver family crest overlaied.
