This is an early Showa vintage (1930) haribako (sewing box) with a unique arrangement of five drawers and an additional lidded 6th section under the lidded top. When this 6th lidded drawer is removed it reveals a secret 7th drawer . There is a finger hole used to access this secret section (see picture 9). This type of tansu chest was used to store valuables as well as equipment for the person of the house to do repairs on Kimono and bedding as well as money and valuables. The lidded top section divides into three area. This haribako has a fine-grained kaede (maple) bird eye burl exterior (see picture 3) with kiri (paulownia) wood drawer interiors (see picture 7) . This chest shows a high degree of craftsmanship as it has been constructed with overlap joint (see picture 12). T here is a side slot on the rear through which a special bamboo measuring devise would have been stored (see picture 11)(not included). The Japanese kanji calligraphy on the bottom reads "1 & 3" (see picture 6). This chest has been well used yet well loved, with the exception of very minor scratches and one repaired drawer on the right top (see picture 3), this chest remains in very fine condition throughout. All drawers run smoothly and the top lidded section swings open and closed with ease. Please enjoy viewing the enlarged photos of this chest before read more
