I picked up this well used, well loved shogi board at an auction in Japan last year. Not sure what the wood is, possibly Kaya. It is very similar in style to the board used in the game of go (goban) however it has fewer grids than the go board and the same number as a western chess set. It takes a very close inspection to see that it is actually made from six pieces of wood put together in a virtual seamless construction. It is more durable than a solid piece making it less likely to check, crack or warp. It dates to the 1970's. Four nicely carved 4" legs with a 4 1/4" thick top (for a total height of 8 1/2" -- 22 cm). It has been well played yet well loved and has a very rich patina that only years of loving use could provide. It does have a a few light stains as seen in the pictures, but overall it is in very fine condition with no nicks or bruises deeper than 1/16". There is a nice grain pattern in the sides and the top has very clean straight grain with a well defined sharp grid. This board is sure to stand the test of time for another century. Measures 13 1/2" by 12 1/4" top (34 x 32 cm) stands 8 1/4 " high ( 22 cm). The playing grids are still quite clear and sharp. I have tried to magnify any of the few blemishes this board has.. This well loved board has a fine patina that you will enjoy playing on for a lifetime. You'll love it................I guarantee it! On the bottom of the board is the name of the past owner, Ichihara . Also written in Japanese characters is the name his home town, Amaike Machi .
