Japanese UCHIDA WOODBLOCK Print of a Cherry Tree in Bloom in Front of a Pagoda The watermark "UCHIDA" appears in the lower right-hand corner of the paper. By artist: ASADA Benji (1899-1984). Pagoda of Ninnaji Temple in Kyoto; oban tate-e. Signed "Asada" with Uchida (publisher) seal underneath; "UCHIDA" watermark in lower margin near the kento notch. Ca. 1930s. Condition: good to excellent. Woodblock Print on Handmade Paper Image: 9.5Ã,Â" X 14.5Ã,Â" Paper: 10.3Ã,Â" X 15.6Ã,Â" BIO: "B. Kyoto. Original name Nakanishi Benji. Took surname Asada in 1927 in honor of two painters of that name whom he admired, one a Japanese-style painter and the other Western-style. In 1914 entered Kyoto City School of Fine Arts snd Crafts; grad. 1924 Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting. In 1928 participated in publication of the magazine Han with Hiratsuka Un'ichi, Maeda Masao, Azechi Utamaro, Munakata Shiko, and others. In 1929 became founding membr of Kyoto Sosaku-Hanga Kyokai. About this time also began studying Japanese-style painting with Nishimura Goun. Exhibited at Kokugakai, Shun'yokai, Teiten, and Nitten. In 1930 he was a member of the group that published Kitsutsuki; in the same year with Tokuriki Tomikichiro and Asano Takeji he also published Creative Prints of Twelve Months in New Kyoto (Sosaku-hanga shin Kyoto junikagetsu). Participated in publication of Taishi hanga in 1931 and Tsuge in 1933. Member of Nihon Hanga Kyokai from 1932. Contributed to One Hundred Views of New Japan (Shin Nihon hyakkei) in 1939. After World War II he abandoned moku-hanga and devoted his full energy to Japanese-style painting, exhibiting at Nitten. He was the father of Asada Takaji (Japanese-style painter and lithographer) and Asada Hiroshi (Western-style painter and etcher)." --'Guide to Modern Japanese Prints: 1900-1975' by H. Merritt and N.
