A very colorful and rare original Japanese woodblock print triptych âeoeSamurai Legend and Eagleâe signed by famous Meiji artist Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900) made in Meiji 16, which is 1883. This is an original woodblock print triptych about 125 years old. This woodblock print triptych depicts the legend of a brave Samurai fighting against a sorcerer on a dark night while an eagle in a pine tree and the red sun. The sorcerer is symbolic of the evil in the world. The young white eagle alone in the pine tree (which is symbolic of strength) stands for the flowering of youthful honor and purity which the young samurai defends. The three panels are separated. The size of each panel of this triptych is 14 x 9 1/4 inches. Kunichika's signature, his chop stamp, carverâe(tm)s seal, and the chop stamps of the publisherâe(tm)s name, address, and publication date are close to the lower right edge of the right panel. The colors are vivid and vibrant on the print. The triptych is not attached to any backing paper or cardboard and strong ink bleeding can be seen through the back of original Japanese Washi paper. Except for a missing tip in the upper right corner and lower right corner of the right panel and the upper left corner and lower left corner of the left panel; one very minor ink smearing at the left of the publisherâe(tm)s mark; and one minor vertical crease in the middle of the middle panel due to the printâe(tm)s age, which is not very visible, this triptych woodblock print is in excellent condition. This print has an estimated value of $300-$400. If you would like this print matted and framed (all with archival acid free materials) extra cost would be $65.00 + and extra $17.00 in shipping for single prints (Ask for costs concerning Diptych and Triptych prints). I use a technique in matting and framing in which the print âeoefloatsâe on a muted color mat surrounded by (usually) a cream colored mat and then framed with a simple, yet elegant black frame. (Single prints 16âe x 20âe--Diptychs 18âe x 24âe --Triptychs 36âe x 24âe Examples of how I mat and frame these pieces are available just email me. KB
