Japanese Wooden Noh Theatre Hannya Oni/DemonMask Up for auction is this is a very nice vintage wooden decorative Hannya Oni noh theatre mask. An oni is a Japanese version of a demon or orge, while a Hannya is a very specific type of oni that in noh theatre productions, represents a woman who is transformed by anger, jealously, and rage into a demon. This mask dates back to the Showa-Period (1927-1989) circa 1950s. The mask is in very good condition with only a few minor scratches, and a little dust as a testament to its age. Hannya (jealous woman): A hannya is very interesting, in that it is believed to be the resulting transformation of what was previously an otherwise ordinary woman that has been consumed with anger and jealously. The extent of these emotions can be seen in the color of her face. The redder the Hannya is, the angrier the woman was. The Hannya is a main character in many Noh theatre plays, and decorative masks of this type of oni are quite popular with mask collectors.
