If you like super quality Japanese, German and American military bringbacks, watch for my collection items which will sell in the weeks ahead. This is probably one of the most RARE & well preserved items we have. I have done research on it & can find out very little. From what I have found, as well as what I've been told, it is a WWII Japanese artillery short sword. The family that brought it to us did not know much about it. They acquired it from an uncle's widow. All they knew was he was a Marine & was on Guadalcanal & Okinawa and brought this back from WWII. He also brought several other items including bayonets & frogs. The sword is approximately 26 1/2" long in the scabbard (overall length). The sword, without scabbard, is approximately 26 1/8", the scabbard is approx. 21 1/2" and the blade from cross guard to tip 21 1/4". There are no numbers anywhere & short sword has a wooden handle in really nice shape (no cracks or dings that would detract). The cross guard & pommel cap is either blued or painted, can't tell. Both are in really nice shape and everything looks as manufactured. You can also tell it is a war veteran. The blade is bright, never blued, or never ground or polished, has Japanese Kanji on both sides under crossguard, blade has been sharpened on one side only (looks to be period sharpened), has blood groove on one side only, one tiny nick, a couple of small pitted areas (does not detract at all), and the blade & tip looks never to have been abused, altered or broken in any way. The nick is about the size of the head of an old straight pin. The scabbard is leather, no cracks, cuts or tears. The seam on the back is intact and sewing looks to be complete. The metal tip and the metal throat are each held by one original staple and are intact. The sword fits nice & tight in scabbard & leather is only scuffed a bit. Everything appears (to everyone who has seen it) to be original & unaltered. It is 100% period, not a foreign remake. I have taken it to several military & gun shows, looking for more information. All I can find out is a Japanese artillery short sword, RARE & all the military collectors want to buy it. Here it is - I wish I could give you more info as to exactly where it was captured and how, but this is all the family could tell. The vet died in the 1980's. It was in a closet for at least 25 years. Good luck in bidding. This weapon is exceptionally rare.
NEW INFORMATION JUST OBTAINED --- the short sword indicates the following: Kanji on the ricasso dates this sword to Meiji 19 (translates to 1886). This was the first production year for this type sword. It appears that this sword is even much more of a historical treasure than we ever dreamed. Hope the added information is helpful to you - it certainly has enlightened us.
