This is an Enso and Calligraphy by Nishida Tenko 1872-1968. Nishida Tenko was a layman who, after a spiritual crisis, founded the Itto-en movement based on public good works. He was a prominent figure in the social and religious history of Modern Japan and his calligraphy is highly valued. The translation of the calligraphy, by John Stevens, reads: "Within not one thing there are inexhaustible treasures- There are flowers, the moon, and pleasure pavilions." The scroll measures 71" (180.3cm) x 12" (30.5cm). The painting measures: 38 3/4" (98.4cm) x 11" (27.9cm). The scroll is in excellent condition but has some cupping (sides curve in) which tends to flaten out after it has hung for a while or if scroll weights are used. The scroll was purchased from the Shambhala Zen Art Gallery and comes with a descriptive letter of authenticity by John Stevens who collected the scroll.
