ANIMALS, FISH, BIRDS, AND BUTTERFLYS IN ART - A GRAND SITE:

HYBRID ASS AND ZEBRA - a hand colored original engraving from William Jardine's (1800-1874) The Naturalist's Library. On good white paper and in very good condition - there is some minor time staining. With a sheet size of 7 1/2 x 4.

An original engraving from the famous The Naturalist's Library issued in 40 volumes between 1833 and 1845, and intended to describe and illustrate all vertebrate species. The prints in the Library were finely etched and published by William H. Lizars, a leading engraver from Edinburgh, well known as the engraver for the first five plates in Audubon's Birds of America. He was a key figure in the history of Victorian science. Jardine owned the finest private natural history museum and library in Britain and made the study of natural history widely available by editing and issuing The Naturalist's Library in forty small, well-illustrated, and relatively affordable volumes. Naturalist's Library is a monument to Victorian industry and zeal for natural history education. The work was divided into four main sections: Ornithology, Mammalia, Entomology and Ichthyology; each was prepared by a leading naturalist. Among the artists who contributed to this massive work was Edward Lear. Ref: Fine Bird Books pp 109.
