This is a large brass bell, probably from the Island of Java. The size is 9 3/4 inches high, and 3 1/2 inches across the bell opening. It is quite beautiful. It's graceful and has lots of engraving on the bell itself. The engravings are of Wayang figures and other floral patterns. The age is difficult to tell, but somew between 50 and a hundred years. The condition is very good. The wall of the bell is about a 1/4 inch thick. Quite heavy. The weight is quite substantial. The handle looks like a lotus blossom. The images of the Wayang came during the first century. The wayang images were used by the Hindus and Muslims to spread religion. Later this mixture of religion was praised as harmony between Hinduism and traditional Indonesian culture. This bell was found at an estate sale in the San Francisco bay area. Thanks for looking! |
